Creating Clever Storage: the whats, the whys and the wherefores.

Clever, shelving storage designed within recess of the kitchen walls, around the chimney breast.

January is such a gloomy month, and I am sure its gloominess and the fact that many of us are stuck indoors – or choose not to go outdoors too much – exaggerates the chaos of mess. Mess from children, mess from pets, just general clutter. I am still tripping over a Christmas box I need to put away … but that’s on me!

The point is, we need storage – places to organise the clutter because when things are clear and tidy, we feel calmer. And, the internet is awash with research suggesting that a decluttered living environment has a huge positive impact on mental and physical well-being.

No clutter here! Integrated tall-cupboards providing storage - lots of storage.

Reduced Stress and Anxiety

Cluttered spaces are linked to higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol. A study published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin found that women who described their homes as cluttered or unfinished experienced more stress and fatigue throughout the day than those who described their spaces as restful and restorative. I second that! I really do.

Improved Focus and Productivity

Apparently, a clutter-free environment helps improve focus and cognitive performance - visual clutter competes for attention, making it harder to focus on tasks. Many of us work from home – and, I am sure I am not the only one, on days when I do, who can’t start my work until the kitchen and washing has been sorted.

Enhanced Mental Health

Living in an organized space can contribute to feelings of calmness and control. Decluttering can also be therapeutic, offering a sense of accomplishment and clarity.

Better Sleep

I would love a better sleep score - my Garmin often screams at me about how poor it is. I have found those Trip drinks, which are great, but once I am accustomed to them, they will no longer work, I am sure. However, a tidy and organized bedroom can improve sleep quality. People who make their beds and maintain a tidy space are more likely to report getting a good night's sleep.

Encourages Healthy Habits

Now, this is important: a decluttered kitchen, in particular, promotes healthier eating habits. Apparently, messy kitchens are more likely to snack on unhealthy foods compared to those in tidy spaces!

Boosted Creativity

An organized environment can free up mental bandwidth, allowing for better problem-solving and creative thinking. Artists and professionals often report that reducing visual distractions helps them feel more inspired and focused. Yep!

So, there are many reasons why we need really clever storage - it helps manage the tidiness of our environment. It is good for us!

We, at Collins Bespoke, like storage. In fact, Nick is a total minimalist and the less clutter the better. So, when designing your dream kitchen, storage, clean lines, symmetry - as well as practicality - are priorities. And, a well-organised kitchen isn’t just practical: it transforms the way you cook, entertain, and enjoy your space. At Collins Bespoke, we specialise in completely custom-made kitchens and we know that quality craftsmanship and thoughtful design can elevate your home-living and well-being to new heights.

What, why and wherefore?

Beautiful open-shelving provides easy-to-access storage, but also a display for those things you want on show, found in our Hildenborough kitchen.

Customised Cabinets for Every Corner

No two kitchens we design and make are the same, and that’s where bespoke cabinetry shines. With custom-made cabinets, you can make the most of every inch of your space—even those tricky corners. Consider pull-out corner units, pull-out larder racking or L-shaped drawers to maximize storage in hard-to-reach areas. Our kitchens are always designed to maximise under-sink space, for example, and we make drawers or cupboards that leave no space wasted because our expertly designed and crafted cabinets can be tailored to fit seamlessly into your kitchen layout.

Integrated Larders

We love a larder and everyone of our kitchens has one: a larder is a game-changer for keeping your kitchen organised and clutter-free. From full-height pull-out larders to hidden pantries tucked behind elegant cabinet doors, bespoke options allow you to design a storage solution that meets your needs. You might opt for adjustable shelving, spice racks, or even integrated lighting to make finding ingredients a breeze. Whatever your style, a bespoke larder offers a perfect blend of form and function, and feng shui.

We love a larder - perfect for small appliances, that still need regular use, and for additional drawers and shelving for kitchen necessities.

Smart Drawer Dividers

Say goodbye to rummaging through messy drawers. Custom drawer dividers can be tailored to organize your cutlery, utensils, and even larger items like baking trays or pots and pans. It has become quite a regular ask to include coffee pod places. Deep drawers with peg systems are particularly popular for keeping dishes neatly stacked and easy to access. But, with bespoke design, you can ensure that every drawer has a purpose and everything has its place.

Elegant Open Shelving

For those who love to display their favourite kitchenware, open shelving is a stylish and practical choice. Whether it’s floating shelves in a natural wood finish or painted to match your kitchen’s palette, this option adds personality and warmth to the room. Our craftsmen can create bespoke shelving solutions that perfectly complement your kitchen design, allowing you to showcase your favourite crockery, glassware, or cookbooks.

Hidden Storage Gems

Bespoke kitchens give you the opportunity to include clever hidden storage features. Think under-seat storage for banquettes, toe-kick drawers beneath cabinets - what a place to keep your robot hoover! Or concealed compartments for small appliances. We offer so many options and one of our designers is sure to find the best ideas for your kitchen. These hidden gems not only help you declutter but also maintain the sleek and seamless aesthetic of your custom kitchen.

Wine Storage Done Right

For wine enthusiasts, incorporating a bespoke wine rack or cooler into your kitchen design can be both functional and beautiful. From built-in wine cabinets to wall-mounted racks, our designs ensure your collection is always within reach and displayed with elegance.

Built-In Recycling Stations

Sustainability starts at home, and a bespoke recycling station can make managing waste much easier. Integrated bins for recycling, composting, and general waste can be tucked away behind custom cabinetry, keeping your kitchen tidy and eco-friendly. And, I cannot endorse these enough!

Tailored Solutions for Small Spaces

If your kitchen is on the smaller side, clever storage solutions are even more important. From fold-out tables and slim pull-out units to vertical storage and overhead racks, we can design bespoke features to make your kitchen feel spacious and efficient.

Fit appliances under counters or within islands, freeing up cupboard space elsewhere.

Those spaces under the stairs are perfect for lunch boxes, supermarket bags, and kitchen bits and bobs.

A peninsular island with a wine-cooler and dishwasher makes space in cupboards elsewhere, and, more worktop space.
