Illuminating your Kitchen: Exploring Ways you can Dazzle with Lights.

As we approach winter, here in the UK, the days are darkening and our indoor lighting choices in our kitchens become all the more important. Of course, we love our lighting features - so often they are design features, characterful talking points, beautiful accessories - but we do need them to be practical too. Like our kitchens.

So. Welcome to our kitchen lighting guide!

Lighting is a crucial aspect of any kitchen, as it not only enhances functionality but also sets the mood and ambiance. Lighting features, done well, can transform your kitchen into a well-lit and inviting space.

Overhead Pendant Lights

Pendant lights are a popular choice for kitchens, as they provide both task and ambient lighting. You can hang them above your kitchen island or dining area to create a focal point while illuminating the space. And, you can choose from a range of styles, from sleek and modern to vintage-inspired designs, to complement your kitchen's aesthetic. We love these glass pendants in our Sandling kitchen - they are large enough to make a pendant-statement but their transparency makes them subtle enough to not invade the kitchen’s space. Equally, the copper industrial-style pendant is a working feature in our New Cottage kitchen, which works so well with the green painted cabinetry.

Under Cabinet Lighting

Illuminating your countertops will create a warm and inviting atmosphere with under cabinet lighting. These discreet fixtures not only enhance visibility for food preparation and those sometimes darker areas, but also add a touch of elegance to your kitchen. Spotlights are popular and look really good but LED strip lights are energy-efficient and perfect for this purpose, offering a seamless glow. Framing the cabinetry with above-counter lighting is also really effective if you want to keep your kitchen’s lighting softer.

Recessed Spot-Lighting

For a clean and minimalist look, consider recessed lighting. These fixtures are installed into the ceiling, providing ample light without occupying any visual space. Use them strategically to evenly distribute light throughout the kitchen, ensuring no area is left in the shadows.

Statement Chandeliers

If you're looking to make a bold statement in your kitchen, a chandelier is an excellent choice. Whether it's a modern, crystal-adorned masterpiece or a rustic, industrial-inspired fixture, a chandelier can become the centrepiece of your kitchen, adding elegance and charm. It can also be the main lighting feature or an accompanying one.

Dimmable Lighting

Flexibility is key when it comes to kitchen lighting. Installing dimmer switches means you can adjust the brightness according to your needs and the time of day. Dimmable lighting allows you to create a cosy atmosphere during intimate gatherings or bright, vibrant lighting for lively cooking sessions. And, don’t forget, white lighting can be crisp or warm - both also create a different ambiance.

Track Lighting

For a versatile lighting solution, consider track lighting. These fixtures consist of multiple adjustable heads that can be directed towards specific areas, such as countertops, sink, or stove. With track lighting, you have the freedom to highlight different areas of your kitchen depending on your needs.

Internal Lighting

It is so important to be able to see inside your cabinets that internal lighting has become a ‘must’ in our kitchen larders. However, it is as much a way to highlight and show drinks cabinet glassware or French dresser displays and ornaments too. Internal lighting has to be considered during the design stages of a kitchen so that electricians can plan power points and wiring.

So. From pendant lights to recessed lighting, chandeliers to under cabinet illumination, the right lighting features can elevate your kitchen's aesthetics and functionality. Experiment when designing your kitchen with different styles and combinations to find the perfect lighting setup that suits your kitchen - our designers can do this with our kitchen design software - and it will enhance your culinary experiences.
