Pumpkin Carving
Carved pumpkins - nothing says, ‘Halloween’, more. However, if you’re like me, who wasn’t blessed with the skills that our cabinet-makers have, pumpkin carving comes with a lot of mistakes and mess! From the traditional to more intricate patterns, here are some pumpkin carving ideas and tips to help you create spooky and impressive jack-o'-lanterns:
1. Choose the right pumpkin: Look for a pumpkin that is firm, has a flat base, and a sturdy stem. This will make carving easier and ensure your pumpkin lasts longer.
2. Plan your design: Before you start carving, sketch out your design on paper. This will help you visualize your ideas and make the carving process smoother.
3. Clean and prepare the pumpkin: Start by cleaning the pumpkin's exterior with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or debris. Cut a hole in the top or bottom of the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds and pulp using a spoon or pumpkin carving tools.
4. Use stencils or templates: If you're not confident in your drawing skills, stencils and templates are a great way to achieve intricate designs. Many websites offer free printable stencils for pumpkin carving.
5. Trace your design: Once you have your stencil or template ready, tape it onto the pumpkin. Use a poking tool or a pin to trace the design onto the pumpkin by poking holes along the outline of the design.
6. Carve carefully - this is where I struggle: When carving, start with the innermost areas of your design and work your way outward. Use a small, serrated pumpkin carving knife or a specialized pumpkin carving tool. Remember to carve away from yourself and take your time to avoid accidents.
7. Preserve your pumpkin: After carving, you can extend the life of your jack-o'-lantern by spraying the pumpkin with a mixture of water and bleach or using a commercial pumpkin preservative spray. This will help prevent mould and decay.
8. Illuminate your creation: Place a tea light or LED candle inside the pumpkin to bring your jack-o'-lantern to life. Make sure to carve a small hole near the top or back of the pumpkin to allow heat and smoke to escape.
Remember, safety is essential when carving pumpkins. Always supervise children, use appropriate tools, and be cautious with open flames. Enjoy the process and have fun creating spooky masterpieces!

Decorated Cookies
This is such an easy way to Halloween. Cookies. And who doesn’t love a cookie! They make great table decorations too. Here are a few Halloween cookie ideas to get you started:
Ghostly Meringue Cookies
Ingredients: Egg whites, sugar, vanilla extract, black edible marker.
Instructions: In a mixing bowl, whip the egg whites until frothy. Gradually add sugar and vanilla extract while continuing to whip until stiff peaks form. Pipe or spoon small ghost shapes onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at a low temperature (around 200°F) for about an hour or until the meringues are dry. Once cooled, use a black edible marker to draw ghostly faces on each meringue.
Spooky Spider Cookies
Ingredients: Sugar cookie dough, chocolate chips, black liquorice.
Instructions: Roll out the cookie dough and cut out round shapes. Bake as per the recipe instructions. Once the cookies are cooled, melt some chocolate chips and use it to attach four pieces of black licorice to the edges of each cookie to create spider legs. Place two more chocolate chips on the cookie for eyes. Let the chocolate set before serving.
Witch Hat Cookies
Ingredients: Chocolate wafer cookies, Hershey's Kisses, orange icing, black icing.
Instructions: Take a chocolate wafer cookie and turn it upside down. Place a Hershey's Kiss on top of the cookie using a dab of orange icing as glue. Use black icing to draw a buckle onto the base of the Hershey's Kiss, creating a witch hat shape.
Remember to have fun and get creative with the decorations and designs. These cookies can be a great addition to Halloween parties or treats for trick-or-treaters. Enjoy baking and happy Halloween!
Jack-o'-Lantern Cookies
Ingredients: Sugar cookie dough, orange food colouring, black icing.
Instructions: Prepare the sugar cookie dough and add orange food colouring to achieve a pumpkin-like color. Roll out the dough and cut out pumpkin shapes using a cookie cutter. Bake as per the recipe instructions. Once the cookies are cooled, use black icing to draw faces, creating jack-o'-lantern designs on each cookie.
DIY Halloween Table Décor
And, of course, you have to create a spooky ambiance by decorating your table, such as spiderweb placemats, pumpkin centrepieces, or eerie candle holders. Here are a few DIY Halloween table décor ideas that can add a spooky touch to your Halloween festivities:
Spiderweb Table Runner
- Lay a black tablecloth or fabric on your table.
- Cut out a large spiderweb shape from white or silver fabric or felt.
- Place the spiderweb in the centre of the table as a table runner.
- Add some plastic spiders or cobwebs on and around the runner for an extra eerie effect.
Halloween Potion Bottles
- Collect empty glass bottles of various shapes and sizes. Remove any labels and clean the bottles thoroughly.
- Fill each bottle with coloured liquids, such as water with food colouring or diluted fruit juices.
- Create custom labels for the bottles, using spooky names like "Witch's Brew," "Zombie Elixir," or "Vampire Blood."
- Arrange the bottles, along with other props.
Creepy Candle Holders
- Take empty glass jars or candle holders.
- Apply a layer of glue or Mod Podge to the outside of the jar.
- Wrap the jar with black lace or cheesecloth, securing it with more glue.
- Optionally, add some plastic spiders, bats, or other creepy crawlies to the lace.
- Place a battery-operated candle or tea light inside the jar for a spooky glow.
Pumpkin Centrepieces
- Select a few medium-sized pumpkins in different colours.
- Cut off the tops of the pumpkins and scoop out the insides.
- Place a small vase or container inside each pumpkin.
- Fill the vases with water and add flowers in autumnal colours, such as orange, red, or deep purple.
- Arrange the pumpkin vases as centrepieces on your table.
Remember you can include other Halloween-themed elements like black and orange tableware, spooky napkins, and themed place cards to complete the look. And, the children will love this part of Halloween preparation creating a wonderfully eerie atmosphere for your Halloween celebrations!
Halloween Food Presentation Ideas
There are so many creative ways to present Halloween-inspired dishes. For example, you serve guacamole in a carved-out pumpkin or, my favourite, mummy hot dogs, using crescent roll dough.
Here are some Halloween food presentation ideas to make your dishes look spook-tacular.
Mummy Hot Dogs
- Wrap strips of crescent roll dough around hot dogs, leaving a small gap near one end for the "mummy face."
- Bake them until the dough is golden brown and the hot dogs are cooked.
- Use mustard or ketchup to create eyes and a mouth on the exposed part of the hot dog.
Jack-o'-Lantern Stuffed Bell Peppers
- Cut the tops off orange bell peppers and remove the seeds and membranes.
- Carve spooky faces into the peppers, resembling Jack-o'-Lanterns.
- Stuff the peppers with your choice of filling, such as rice, quinoa, or a meaty mixture.
- Bake until the peppers are tender and the filling is cooked.
Graveyard Dip
- Prepare a delicious dip of your choice, such as spinach and artichoke, or buffalo chicken dip.
- Spread the dip evenly on a large platter or baking dish.
- Crush some dark-coloured tortilla chips or black crackers and sprinkle them over the dip to resemble soil.
- Use tombstone-shaped crackers or cut out tombstone shapes from cheese slices, and place them upright in the dip.
- Optionally, you can use edible markers to write spooky words or R.I.P. on the tombstones.
Witch's Broomstick Snacks
- Take thin pretzel sticks and insert them into the cut end of a cheese slice or a mini cheese cube.
- Tie a small chive or green onion around the top of the cheese to resemble a broomstick.
Monster Eyeballs
- Make deviled eggs by halving hard-boiled eggs and removing the yolks.
- Mix the yolks with mayonnaise, mustard, and seasonings to create the filling.
- Pipe or spoon the filling back into the egg white halves.
- Create "eyeballs" by placing a sliced olive or a small round slice of cucumber on top of each egg half.
Remember, you can also use Halloween-themed serving dishes, spooky toothpicks, and themed food labels to enhance the presentation - I’ve seen some popular supermarkets have an array of examples. Have fun and enjoy these spooky and delicious treats!
Remember, Halloween is all about having fun and being creative, so let your imagination run wild in the kitchen.
Happy Halloween!
